Why Revive and Support the National Old-Time Banjo Contest at the 48th Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days

The National Old-Time Banjo Contest is a natural fit for Uncle Dave Macon Days/Roots —celebrating the instrument, repertoire, and performance style at the heart of old-time music. Reviving the contest for the 48th Annual festival strengthens the festival’s identity as a place where tradition is not only remembered, but actively passed on through live performance, friendly competition, and community recognition.

Financial support ensures meaningful prize money, quality judging, and a well-run contest that attracts strong players and encourages new participants. A revitalized banjo contest can become a signature festival featuring moments audiences remember, giving sponsors a high-visibility story to align with, and reinforcing Murfreesboro’s reputation as a hub for old-time music and heritage arts.

  • Preserves heritage: honors Uncle Dave Macon’s legacy and keeps old-time banjo traditions visible and valued. This includes Macon Music Education, a program that educates the community which includes public exhibition in classrooms about the history of the roots of America’s music.
  • Building the next generation: prize money and recognition motivate youth and beginner musicians to enter, learn, and return.
  • Boosts attendance and engagement: contests create a “must-see” schedule anchor that keeps visitors onsite longer.
  • Expands regional draw: a national contest label helps attract competitors and families from beyond the local area.
  • Creates sponsor moments: category naming and on-stage announcements provide repeated, positive sponsor recognition tied to music and community.
  • Strengthens the festival brand: distinctive programming differentiates Uncle Dave Macon Days from other events.

Support opportunity: Sponsoring the revival of the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration by the 99th US Congress, the National Old-Time Banjo Contest (or an individual category) is a direct, measurable way to help keep this tradition thriving at the 48th Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days/Roots Rendezvous.
